Kyphoplasty

Kyphoplasty

Kyphoplasty is performed in cases of vertebral fractures. Aging or illnesses or severe injuries to the vertebrae (accident, etc.), the vertebral body can be fractured, meaning that the vertebral body shape changes from cuboidal to a triangle. Over time, this fracture raises the vertebrae, causing dynamic joint disruption, strain on the joints, and severe back pain.

In Kyphoplasty, cement( MMA )injection into the vertebral body restores vertebral force and vertebral shape to normal and relieves pain and problems.

How to do the kyphoplasty

The patient sleeps in a perone  position and with the guidance of a radiology fluroscope (C-ARM) the necessary device enters the fractured vertebral body and then the balloon is inserted into the fractured part and bone cement is injected into it. The bone cement solidifies within 15 minutes and tightens the vertebral body which was weakened by fracture. The same strength will relieve the pain of the patient .

Indication of kyphoplasty :

Kyphoplasty is useful in people with disabilities unable to undergo open surgery or in patients with malignant lesions due to malignant tumors, as well as all those who have had vertebral compression fractures and despite routine treatments (bed rest, brace).

 Kyphoplasty advantage :

  • No need for extensive surgery in elderly patients
  • No need for general anesthesia
  • No need for long hospital stay
  • Pain relief within a short period of time (within 24-48 hours)
  • Return to daily activities in a short period of time
